Beatboxing Lesson 6

Lesson Overview

After perfecting the “been to the beach” rhythm, Nathan is going to show you the “been to the country” rhythm. The “C” sound in “country” is going to give you your first real practical introduction to the clap sound that is a very prevalent part of beatboxing.

Lesson Goals

  • Learn the new “been to the country” rhythm just using your mouth
  • Practice your breathing techniques, mainly remembering not to ever breathe in using your mouth
  • The clap sound at the beginning of “country” is a new sound for you. Practice the different ways of making it – there are a couple different ways
  • Make the new rhythm on your didgeridoo while practicing taking breaths at just the right time

Training Tips

  • When it comes to taking breaths, each person will need to take one at a different time. Some will need them more frequently while others can go longer on a single breath. Figure out what works for you, not what works for Nathan or other didgeridoo players
  • Remember when breathing, never breathe in through your mouth. Depending on the didgeridoo you are playing you could end up with a mouthful of mud or splinters
  • Lip positioning is important. If you find that you aren’t getting the right sound from your didgeridoo, change your lip positioning until you find your sweet spot
  • Try changing the “C” in “country” to a “P” and see how much the sound changes for you
  • Try to get this technique mastered before moving onto the next lesson. You won’t be doing yourself any favors by moving on to the next technique before you are ready
