Breathing Exercise 1

Lesson Overview

As you already know, breathing is one of the most important parts of playing the didgeridoo. Trying to beatbox into the didgeridoo will require some very different breathing techniques and in this lesson, Nathan is going to teach you some of the most important breathing exercises to keep your lungs full of air comfortably while you play.

Lesson Goals

  • Squat down and breathe in deep into your belly until you can feel your diaphragm pushing out
  • Sit with one knee crossed over your other leg and cross the opposite arm over the raised knee while turning your head backwards. Now breathe in deeply like the last step. Repeat with your other leg and arm
  • Put your fingertips together over your belly while you breathe in to feel how your diaphragm expands and contracts while you breathe

Training Tips

  • These breathing exercises are not just great for playing the didgeridoo but they are healthy exercises for your body as well
  • Learning how to control your breathing and understanding how your breathing works will help you to better understand how to play your didgeridoo
  • For a few times while you are doing these breathing exercises, forget all about your didgeridoo and focus on taking big, deep, healthy breaths
  • Try each exercise a few times before moving on to the next step. These are just exercises and not techniques that you need to master before moving on but you should still do enough of them to feel comfortable with the exercise
