Beatboxing Lesson 5
Lesson Overview
In this lesson Nathan will describe how to get out of a particular rhythm if you happen to be stuck in it. By using the “been to the beach” rhythm you can easily switch up your rhythm with a smooth transition.
Lesson Goals
- Practice making the new “been to the beach” rhythm at normal speed until it feels natural
- Slow down the “been to the beach” rhythm to really get a feel for the technique and then gradually speed it up until you are at about double tempo but still performing the rhythm clearly
- Practice the new “been to the beach” rhythm using your didgeridoo
- Once you really have the hang of it, try replacing the “been” from “been to the beach” with the bird-like chirp that Nathan uses
Training Tips
- If you get stuck in one of your other rhythms and feel like you can’t get out of that rhythm without stopping, try switching to this “been to the beach” rhythm instead
- Being able to perform the rhythm at a variety of different speeds with just your mouth is important for adapting yourself to the didgeridoo
- Remember that you don’t always need a continuous drone going – especially here you should be taking breaths at the end of the beat. Musically it can sound better to have a short period of silence in some instances
- Make sure this technique is like second nature to you before you move on to the next lesson. You will only be making things harder on yourself if you try to keep moving forward before having a full grasp of this lesson
