Adding Your Voice to the Didgeridoo

Lesson Overview

In this video we show you how to add your voice while playing the didgeridoo. This technique sounds great and is easy to do with a little practice. Adding your voice is how to make many of the animal sounds like the dog howl, dog bark and Australian kookaburra that you will learn in the coming lessons.

Lesson Goals

  • Be able to add you voice while playing the drone
  • Keep a steady, controlled drone while adding your voice
  • Use a high pitched “cartoon” voice

Training Tips

  • Remember to follow these 3 steps when adding your voice to the didgeridoo
    1. First make a sound with your voice without the didgeridoo
    2. Then make the same sound through your vibrating lips
    3. Then play the same sound on your didgeridoo
  • Your brain will want to try and blow harder instead of just adding your voice. Remember, your airflow and drone should remain the same, just add your voice over the top
  • If it’s not working, rather than trying harder, take your lips off your didgeridoo and go through the 3 steps above. Repeat these steps as many times as it takes to get comfortable
  • The clearer your drone sounds, the better your voice will come through
  • The higher pitched you can make your voice, the easier you will hear it
