How to Make the Didgeridoo Drone Sound – Part 1

Lesson Overview

Most people think you need to blow down the didgeridoo to play it. Nope, that won’t do it. The didgeridoo is purely an amplifier. It’s the sound of your lips vibrating, not the air you blow, that produces your didgeridoo drone. In this lesson, we show you how to make the lip vibration required to make the drone.

Lesson Goals

  • Be able to vibrate your lips easily without the didgeridoo
  • Make your lips vibrate for more than 5 seconds
  • Make your lips vibrate using the smallest amount of air you can

Training Tips

  • Vibrating your lips like this is probably not something you have done since you were 5 years old. Take some time to practice this as it will get easier very quickly
  • Remember, it’s all about the sound of your lips, not the air you are blowing
  • The easier you find vibrating your lips, the easier it will be to play the drone on the didgeridoo. So practice this step until you are comfortable
  • It should feel like you are holding your breath and letting just enough air out to make the vibration
