Playing With Tapping Sticks 1

Lesson Overview

Adding a simple percussion instrument to your didgeridoo playing will add a whole new dimension to your sound. In this lesson, Sanshi shows you the first steps in playing with tapping sticks

Lesson Goals

  • Know how to hold the tapping sticks to get the clearest sound with good resonance
  • Play the rhythm “dida (B) dida (B)” while tapping on the first “d” of each dida
  • Keep the timing of your tapping sticks and didgeridoo playing together

Training Tips

  • Take the time to get comfortable holding and tapping the sticks first
  • Get your didgeridoo in a comfortable place, whether you are holding it or it’s on a stand
  • If you don’t have a stand, you can rest one stick on your lap, and tap with the other. That’s frees up your other hand to hold your didgeridoo
  • Some players tap a stick on their didgeridoo. While this works, it can also lead to damage or cracks in your didgeridoo if it’s not very strong
  • Try and play the rhythm faster and faster to improve your control
