The Wobble #3
Lesson Overview
In this lesson, we show you how to play an exciting rhythm by combining the wobble breathing technique with harmonic variation.
Lesson Goals
- Play step one: “do (B) de do (B) de do (B) de do (B) de do” (think of the “do (B)” as a bounce breath)
- Play the full rhythm: “do (B) de do (B) da do (B) de do (B) da do”
- Play the rhythm fast enough to get the wobble effect
Training Tips
- Practice this rhythm nice and slowly to begin with to get all the elements locked into place
- Get comfortable with the base rhythm timing first
- If you are comfortable with the bounce breath technique, think about the “do (B)” as a bounce breath – small diaphragm pulse with the “do” immediately followed by a small breath
- As you get comfortable, slowly speed up the technique
- Then add in the harmonic variations by changing your tongue movements
- To play this rhythm fast, you want the breath in to just happen naturally without any thought or effort required. This is where being comfortable with the bounce breath technique really helps
- In the more advanced rhythms, there is a point where the feeling of the rhythm overrides the exact clinical techniques played. Get the building blocks in place first with the techniques, then relax and shift your focus onto the sound you are playing. Try and keep your focus on the sound while you evolve this technique and rhythm
